What is Respiratory distress syndrome?

13:23 - 13 February , 2024

Disease

It is a serious complication caused by the accumulation of fluid in the lung alveoli, preventing them from having enough oxygen in the lungs and, therefore, in the blood and tissues.

Respiratory distress syndrome occurs in people with heart, liver, or kidney failure, as well as direct or indirect injuries to the lungs.

Among the most common causes are:

  • Inhaling smoke or chemical gases.
  • Alcohol abuse.
  • Vomit aspiration into the lungs.
  • Pneumonia.
  • COVID-19.
  • Pancreatitis.
  • Burns.
  • Septicemia.
  • Smoking.
  • Blood transfusions.
  • Lung transplant.
  • Head or chest trauma.

Depending on the amount of oxygen in the blood and when breathing, respiratory distress syndrome is classified as mild, moderate, or severe.

Signs and symptoms Respiratory distress syndrome

  • Confusion.
  • Trouble breathing.
  • Fatigue.
  • Heavy breathing.
  • Fast heart rate.
  • High blood pressure.

Respiratory distress syndrome can trigger several complications, including blood clots, lung collapse, infections, pulmonary fibrosis, and death.

Diagnosis and treatment Respiratory distress syndrome

Once the doctor analyzes your symptoms and clinical history, they will perform a physical examination and request a series of tests to rule out other conditions and make an accurate diagnosis, including:

  • Lab tests.
  • X-rays.
  • Computed tomography.
  • Cardiac ultrasound.
  • Electrocardiogram.

The treatment consists of administering respiratory support, removing fluid from the lungs, reducing inflammation, preventing and treating infections, as well as avoiding the formation of blood clots in the legs and lungs.

At the Cardiovascular Center, we offer you a wide range of prevention, diagnosis, timely treatment, and follow-up services to care for you through a comprehensive and multidisciplinary care model. Come to us, we want to hear your heart.
