What is Systemic Capillary Leak Syndrome?

18:00 - 15 February , 2024

Disease

It is a serious disorder characterized by the leakage of fluids and protein through the blood vessels, which causes inflammation of the tissues and a sudden drop in blood pressure that can lead to organ failure or death.

Systemic capillary leak syndrome, also known as Clarkson’s disease, can arise from an upper respiratory infection or physical overexertion, triggering hypotension, edema, or hypovolemia.

This pathology can be confused with serious reactions to generalized infections or major allergic reactions.

To date, the cause of systemic capillary leak syndrome is unknown, but clinical studies indicate that people between 45 and 55 years old are at greater risk of suffering from it.

Signs and symptoms Systemic Capillary Leak Syndrome

  • Weight gain.
  • Daze.
  • Fatigue.
  • Lack of energy.
  • Sore abdomen.
  • Muscle pain.
  • High fever.
  • Swollen body.
  • Irritability.
  • Nausea.
  • Excessive thirst.
  • Digestive disorders.
  • Limited urination.
  • Dark urine.

In the final phase, massive edema reabsorption occurs, causing excess urine and weight loss.

The greatest risk of systemic capillary leak syndrome is that by reducing blood volume and blood pressure, a lack of oxygen and basic nutrients can occur reducing the proper functionality of the brain, liver, and kidneys.

Diagnosis and treatment Systemic Capillary Leak Syndrome

It is complex to diagnose this disease, so after analyzing the symptoms and clinical history, the doctor will perform a physical examination and request tests that allow them to corroborate the diagnosis, such as:

  • Blood and urine tests.
  • X-rays.
  • MRI.
  • Computed tomography.

Systemic capillary leak syndrome has no cure, so medical treatment consists of treating the symptoms by ingesting drugs and fluids intravenously to keep blood pressure stable and prevent damage to vital organs such as the brain, heart, liver, and kidneys; as well as reduce the frequency and severity of future episodes.
