There are different tools to avoid pregnancy, which range from medications, strategies, actions, and instruments specially designed for this purpose.

The most common contraception systems contemplate the following aspects:

  • Division: they consist of creating a physical barrier to avoid the contact of the sperm with the eggs, preventing fertilization.
  • Hormonal: through hormone treatments, it controls the ovulation process, also altering the cervical environment in order to hinder the transit of sperm.
  • Intrauterine device (IUD): these are devices implanted at the uterus to prevent sperm from fertilizing eggs.
  • Sterilization surgeries: there are several options and they apply to both sexes.

The most common birth control methods that do not need a prescription are:

  • Family planning.
  • Abstinence.
  • Male and female condoms.
  • Spermicidal creams.

There are other methods for which a consultation and prescription are required:

  • Intramuscular contraceptive shots.
  • Oral contraceptive pills.
  • Contraceptive patch: it sticks to the skin, where it releases hormones that prevent ovulation when absorbed.
  • Diaphragm: covers the cervix and must be inserted prior to sexual intercourse.
  • Hormonal implant: it is a capsule with etonogestrel that is implanted in the arm under the skin, preventing, for approximately three years, the ovulation process.
  • Intrauterine device (IUD): it can last between 7 and 10 years.

Regarding the surgical procedures that prevent conception, the following stand out:

  • Hysterectomy: This is a permanent method, where the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes are removed.
  • Tubal ligation: it is usually permanent, although in some cases, it can be reversed, it consists of tying the fallopian tubes, preventing the eggs from reaching the uterus.
  • Vasectomy: it is an effective method for men, whose technique indicates the ligation and cutting of the vas deferens through which the sperm pass.
