A video bronchoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the respiratory tract in detail with a bronchoscope. This is a thin, very flexible tube that is inserted through the patient’s nose or mouth.

The bronchoscope is made of fiber optics and has a tiny video camera at one end. This camera transmits images of the bronchial area and surrounding structures to a screen, which is a great help for making an accurate diagnosis.

Video bronchoscopy has important diagnostic uses. It also allows for various procedures by making it easy to introduce tools like needles, forceps, and brushes. Some of these procedures include:

  • Obtaining intra- and extra-bronchial biopsies
  • Removing polyps
  • Administering medications
  • Stopping bleeding by cauterizing vessels
  • Placing radioactive needles for brachytherapy
  • Inserting stents to clear blockages

Video bronchoscopy is an outpatient procedure and usually does not require general anesthesia. It is generally safe, but it can present some risks like bleeding and infections. It is not recommended for people with heart or breathing problems.

Main Clinical Conditions Where Video Bronchoscopy Is Indicated

Video bronchoscopy is required to confirm diagnoses and potential diseases in a variety of clinical situations. The most common cases are:

  • Recurrent respiratory infections
  • Chronic cough
  • Pneumonia
  • Obstructions in the trachea or bronchi
  • Tumors
  • Nodules
  • Pulmonary masses
  • Confirmation of interstitial pathology
  • Application of therapies, such as:
    • Laser
    • Radiotherapy

In the Pulmonary Physiology and Inhalation Therapy department, we have expert respiratory therapists who have the knowledge and skills to perform their work with the support of the most advanced technology in pulmonary function tests, metabolic monitoring, and video bronchoscopy.
