World cancer day

4 February 2020

Dia mundial Cancer

World Cancer Day is celebrated on February 4, a date set 20 years ago by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness about this disease and how to prevent it.

Cancer is a disease characterized by the growth and multiplication of abnormal cells that have the ability to destroy healthy tissues. This can appear in almost any part of the body regardless of age or gender.

Each year 9.6 million people die from cancer, a figure higher than deaths from HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined; however, this diagnosis is no longer a death sentence, as it was several decades ago. Early detection and adequate treatment increase the patients’ survival rate and quality of life.

According to WHO estimates, by 2030 new cancer cases will exceed 20 million annually. This trend not only represents a challenge for health professionals, but also forces us all to improve our lifestyle and have frequent medical check-ups.
As of now, there is no agreement among the medical community about what causes cancer. However, it is known that reducing tobacco and alcohol consumption, as well as a balanced diet and the least possible exposure to external factors such as irradiation and industrial products, can reduce the risk of contracting it. Genetic predisposition is responsible for between 5 and 10% of all cancers.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has located that the most common types of cancer among Mexican men are prostate, colorectal, testicular, pulmonary, and gastric; and among Mexican women, breast, thyroid, cervical, uterus, and colorectal.

Thanks to new research and medical advances, more is known about this disease, which translates into more accurate diagnoses and treatments, as well as the reduction of risk factors for developing it.

Our Cancer Center offers treatments at the level of the best medical centers in the world, thus being a benchmark for its quality and medical equipment that allows us to provide more personalized treatments to adults and children.
