What is warthin’s tumor?

11 December 2025

It is a benign tumor of the salivary glands that usually affects the lymphatic tissue in the caudal part of the parotid gland or the submandibular gland. It is most common in elderly men.

Warthin’s tumor, also known as cystadenolymphoma or benign lymphomatous papillary cystadenoma, is the second most common form of parotid tumors after pleomorphic adenoma. It develops gradually and can appear on both sides and potentially become cancerous over time, especially if not detected early.

The cause of Warthin’s tumor is currently unknown. Experts point to smoking as one of the main reasons, but other factors may also contribute to its appearance, such as:

  • Genetics.
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
  • Exposure to radiation.
  • Exposure to chemicals.
  • Chronically inflamed oral cavity.
