ABC Medical Center continually strives for excellence and leadership, recognized as a model institution for its top clinical standards. As another step in this ongoing growth, it has now received Humanized Care certification for its Intensive Care Units.
AENOR México and the HUCI Project evaluated compliance with best practices focused on patients, families, and intensive care staff at the Santa Fe Campus, awarding it the highest possible rating, making it the first ICU in Mexico and Latin America to receive this recognition. Only two other units in Spain currently hold this certification, with 17 more around the world in the process of being certified.
The HUCI Project evaluates different areas within ICUs, while AENOR (the Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification) verifies that units have implemented the required measures, including 160 practices outlined in the Manual of Best Practices for Humanized Care.
These measures improve care based on each patient’s and family’s specific needs while supporting the well-being of the healthcare staff caring for them and helping reduce the stress that often comes with working in an Intensive Care Unit.

One measure implemented was an open-door ICU policy, with protocols that allow flexible visiting hours, the admission of minors, and even patients’ pets. It’s worth noting that before minors are allowed to visit, emotional support and interaction with the care team is offered to prepare them for the visit.
A communication board was also introduced for patients with a tracheostomy or those who are intubated, along with various activities designed to reduce anxiety. As a result, patient care and wellbeing have improved, with particular emphasis on patients and families facing end-of-life care limitations, ensuring their emotional, physical, and spiritual needs are met with respect.
To support hospital staff and strengthen working relationships, the team holds simulation workshops focused on awareness and soft skills, recreational workshops, and other group activities aimed at improving camaraderie and reducing workplace stress.
The creation of an ICU journal has provided a way to record events that occur while patients are sedated, with the goal of giving them a clearer picture of their experience once they wake up, including the emotions and thoughts shared by their family, friends, and healthcare staff. This has proven meaningful, helping patients realize they were never alone and better understand their recovery progress.
Thanks to this new certification, ABC Medical Center continues to strengthen its position within the healthcare sector, once again establishing itself as a top-tier hospital dedicated to protecting patient health and safety through best practices, respecting the dignity of everyone involved, and fostering the development of highly knowledgeable, compassionate healthcare professionals.
