Can you feel that you sleep well but without feeling rested?

7 of July 2022

Duermo pero no descanso

I sleep, but I don’t feel rested" is a phrase heard all too frequently, and it describes a situation that affects both a person’s health and quality of life.

It is estimated that in Mexico, approximately 45% of the population suffers from some type of sleep-related pathology. Snoring and sleep apnea are the most common, but these issues can also range to insomnia and other less frequent disorders.

Dr. Miguel Ángel Collado Ortiz, a neurologist and sleep specialist at Centro Médico ABC, points out that sleeping is an essential activity for the body, as it allows us to achieve proper physical and mental recovery.

Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders are conditions that affect the quality, duration, and patterns of rest, interfering with a person’s day-to-day functioning. These disruptions can stem from medical, psychological, or environmental factors and can result in conditions such as:

  • Fatigue-induced stress
  • Poor concentration
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Headaches
  • Memory problems

What to Do If You Can’t Sleep

Sleep disorders have various causes, but poor habits are a very common trigger, points out Dr. Collado.

Both the duration and quality of your sleep can be affected by staying up late to watch TV, read, or use electronic devices; exercising right before bed can also disrupt your sleep.

Dietary habits play a role as well, particularly late at night. It is recommended to avoid heavy dinners and limit the intake of items like coffee or tea, as they can keep you awake longer.

Consequences of Not Sleeping Well

Getting proper rest helps people perform better physically and emotionally, notes Dr. Collado. It keeps your mood at its best, reduces memory lapses, and can even lessen morning headaches in some cases.

To properly address sleep disorders, it is best to consult a medical specialist or visit a sleep clinic to find a personalized solution. Self-medication should be avoided, as pharmaceutical treatments are often considered a last resort.
