Can you feel that you sleep well but without feeling rested?

7 July 2022

Key points:

  • Electronic devices affect the body’s need for sleep.
  • Stress, lack of concentration, and depression are some of the negative effects of not sleeping well.
  • better physical and emotional development is achieved thanks to rest.

In Mexico, it is estimated that approximately 45% of the population has some type of sleep-related pathology, within which snoring or sleep apnea are the most frequent, but they can turn into insomnia and other less frequent disorders.

Dr. Miguel Ángel Collado Ortiz, neurologist, and sleep specialist at ABC Medical Center says that sleeping is a very important activity for the body because it allows us to have a correct mental and physical recovery.

How do I know if I suffer from some type of sleep disorder?

A person with difficulty sleeping or with sleep disorders will suffer various situations such as:

  • Stress due to tiredness.
  • Lack of concentration.
  • Depression.
  • Anxiety.
  • Headache.
  • Loss of memory.

Recommendations for a better rest

There are various origins in sleep disorders, but bad habits take an important role in their generation, says Dr. Collado.

Sleep hours and their quality can be influenced by the time you go to bed, be it by watching television, reading, or using other electronic devices; exercising before bed can also affect sleep.

Another factor that can cause sleep disorders is food intake, especially at night. It is recommended not to have a large dinner and limit the consumption of products such as coffee or tea as they could keep you awake longer.

What happens to your body if you sleep properly?

Resting correctly helps the person to have better physical and emotional performance, says Dr. Collado, allowing your mood to be optimal, with less brain fog, and even morning headaches may decrease in some cases.

For proper attention to sleep disorders, it is recommended to see a specialist or a sleep clinic to find a solution to this problem. It is also recommended to avoid self-medication since drug treatment is often the last option.
