Whether in the hospital or in daily life, people living with diabetes need to keep their blood glucose levels under control. That’s why the nutritionists at ABC Medical Center help oversee all the food offered within the hospital.

Lic. María Fernanda Ordoñez, nutritionist at ABC Medical Center, explains that when planning diets for people living with diabetes, the goal is to avoid foods high in sugar, such as gelatin, sugary drinks, and fruits and vegetables with a high glycemic index.

“Approximately 62 million people in the Americas (422 million people worldwide) have diabetes, most of them living in low- and middle-income countries, and 244,084 deaths (1.5 million worldwide) are directly attributed to diabetes each year. Both the number of cases and the prevalence of diabetes have risen steadily over the past few decades.”

It’s also important to keep carbohydrate intake in check, which is why it’s not recommended to combine them, for example, skipping bread if the soup already contains carbs, or avoiding tortillas if you’re having seeds, and so on.

Living with diabetes doesn’t mean you can’t eat certain foods, it means you need to assess and balance how much of them you eat in order to live a healthy life.

If you’re a hospitalized patient at ABC Medical Center, you can rest assured that our nutritionists are always looking after your diet.

The diet for people with diabetes includes soups, vegetables, proteins like beef, chicken, or fish, and whole wheat bread or tortillas, foods that aren’t fried or battered, but that still provide the patient with rich, satisfying nutrition.

ABC Medical Center has a highly trained team of doctors and nutritionists who work every day to look after patients’ health and nutrition, notes Lic. Ordoñez.
