What is Endometriosis?

16:21 - 27 April , 2021

Disease

It is a common condition in women of reproductive age, especially between 30 and 40 years of age. Endometriosis refers to the thickening and overflow of the internal tissues of the uterus, that is, the endometrium, causing the formation of lesions and/or cysts in the ovaries or other organs.

Origin and potential risks:

Although the origin of its appearance is not known for sure, there are some hypotheses that point to immune disorders or as a consequence of some surgeries.

In addition thereto, some risk factors are a family history with endometriosis, hormonal disorders, having shorter cycles in the menstrual period, or having started menstruation at an early age.

Signs and symptoms Endometriosis

The main symptom associated with endometriosis is extreme pain in the pelvic, abdominal, and lower back areas during the menstrual period. However, there are also some other symptoms such as, for example, constipation, excessive tiredness, excessive bleeding during the menstrual period, pain when urinating or having sexual intercourse.

Diagnosis and treatment Endometriosis

Once they review your medical history, they will request additional studies and tests such as ultrasound, pelvic examination, or a laparoscopic examination.

Some of the most common treatments will focus on the prescription of drugs such as painkillers/anti-inflammatories, hormonal therapy, and/or surgery, depending on each case.
