What is genital warts?

They are bumps that appear in the genital area as a result of an infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). In some cases, the presence of genital warts could indicate a more aggressive HPV, which, in turn, could lead to the development of certain types of cancer.

Potential risks:

Genital warts appear by some type of HPV after having sexual intercourse, usually when:

We have multiple sexual partners.
Our immune system is weak.
We have a viral infection at the time of contagion.

Signs and symptoms Genital warts

The most obvious manifestation is the presence of a bump, either flat or in the shape of a cauliflower, in the genital area or the oral cavity. In women, the presence of genital warts is more common in the vagina, anus, or mouth.

Sometimes, itching may appear in the area together with the presence of warts, as well as a more intense vaginal discharge.

Diagnosis and treatment Genital warts

The diagnosis will be made after a physical examination, and/or through complementary tests such as a colposcopy or HPV DNA tests. Your ABC doctor may prescribe drugs or wart removal by cauterization, surgery, or freezing.
