What is Gestational diabetes?

15:53 - 27 April , 2021

Disease

It occurs when during pregnancy there is a significant increase in the blood glucose level in women who had not previously manifested it. Its appearance will be temporary and after delivery, the glucose level usually returns to normal.

Origin and potential risks:

Although it is not certain why it appears in certain women, it is necessary to know the existence of certain factors that could directly affect the chances of developing gestational diabetes, such as being overweight and obese, having a sedentary lifestyle, and having a family history.

Signs and symptoms Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes is usually silent, and the most characteristic symptoms are thirst and an increased need to urinate.

Diagnosis and treatment Gestational diabetes

Timing of diagnosis is essential, so it is important that you mention if you have a direct relative who suffered from gestational diabetes or who has some other type of diabetes. If so, you may need to have a blood glucose level test in the first few weeks of pregnancy.

It is important to know that, once diagnosed, you will need to make significant changes to your diet and lifestyle to keep your blood sugar levels under control. In some cases, you may be prescribed some complementary medications to regulate glucose during pregnancy. It is important that you follow the doctor’s instructions to have a smooth delivery and prevent the appearance of other conditions, such as, for example, type 2 diabetes.
