What is ovarian cyst?

26 January 2026

It refers to the formation of small fluid-filled sacs (cysts) in one or both ovaries. Most are benign and do not cause clear symptoms; however, in some cases, significant discomfort may occur or they may be the manifestation of another disease.

Potential Risks

Ovarian cysts usually appear as a product of the normal menstrual period, although they could also arise during pregnancy, or due to the presence of other diseases, such as various hormonal disorders or endometriosis.

Signs and symptoms ovarian cyst

Frequently, cysts do not cause discomfort, but when they rupture, they can generate abdominal and pelvic pain, as well as nausea and vomiting.

Diagnosis and treatment ovarian cyst

You will be given a physical and pelvic exam using an ultrasound to detect the presence of cysts. Complementary blood tests may also be necessary to rule out the presence of other diseases.

Since most cysts are benign, regular monitoring might be enough to wait for their evolution or spontaneous disappearance. In cases where the cysts increase in size, rupture, and cause discomfort, surgical intervention might be necessary.
