What is a nodule

6 October 2025

Patient presenting with a nodule on their arm to be examined by the dermatologist.

A nodule refers to a mass or lump that can form in different parts of the body and generally has a rounded or oval shape; its development may occur in the skin, internal organs, glands, or any other body tissue.

What are nodules

In general, the development of a nodule is the result of inflammatory processes, infections, cell accumulation, or malignant alterations; although in most cases they are benign, there is a possibility that they could indicate a more serious condition such as cancer.

The composition of a nodule may vary: some are solid, while others may contain fluid. Depending on its particular characteristics and location, different types of diagnostic evaluations and treatments may be required.

The presence of a nodule is not a diagnosis in itself, but rather a finding that must be investigated to determine its underlying cause.

Skin nodule

One type of nodule is the skin nodule, which appears as a palpable lump located beneath the surface of the skin. They generally form due to abnormal tissue accumulation, inflammation, infection, or neoplastic processes.

Cutaneous nodules can vary widely in texture, color, mobility, and sensitivity; some are painful to the touch, while others are completely painless.

Among the most common causes of skin nodules are:

  • Cysts: fluid-filled or semi-solid structures that are usually benign, such as sebaceous cysts.
  • Lipoma: accumulation of fatty tissue that forms soft, movable lumps under the skin.
  • Folliculitis: inflammation of the hair follicles, which may lead to the formation of red, tender nodules.
  • Skin infections: abscesses or boils caused by bacterial infections that produce pus-filled lumps.
  • Skin tumors: which may be either benign or malignant.

It is important that when someone finds a nodule on the skin, they see a specialist for a professional examination. The initial evaluation usually includes a visual inspection and palpation to determine characteristics such as consistency, size, and mobility, and if necessary, a biopsy may be requested.

Treatment will depend on the underlying cause of the nodule, which may include surgical removal, drainage, or the use of antibiotics, to name a few examples.

What is a breast nodule

Another common type of nodule is the breast nodule. In this case, it appears as a mass or lump within the breast tissue.

These types of nodules are common, especially in women, and may have multiple causes ranging from hormonal changes to more serious conditions such as breast cancer.

Although many breast nodules are benign, it is crucial that any lump detected in this area be evaluated by a doctor to rule out possible serious issues.

Depending on the nature of the nodule, different treatments may be applied.

Although the presence of a breast nodule does not necessarily indicate a serious condition, it should never be ignored, since in the case of breast cancer, timely care is crucial.

Nodules in any part of the body should always be evaluated. There is a high probability that they are a benign condition that does not require much attention, but they could also be related to a more serious situation, which makes their examination essential.
