Infertility is defined as the inability to achieve pregnancy after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse in women under age 35, notes Dr. Alejandro Kava Braverman, obstetrician-gynecologist specializing in human reproduction at ABC Medical Center.
According to the European Society of Human Reproduction, an estimated 43 million couples worldwide experience infertility, with the main causes falling into three categories: a female factor, a male factor, or a combination of both.
The World Health Organization reports that between 48 million couples and 186 million people worldwide experience infertility.
Female Factors Behind Infertility
In women, contributing factors can vary widely. Age is considered the most important predictor of a successful pregnancy. Women’s fertility tends to remain stable between ages 20 and 30, after which it begins to decline, becoming more noticeable by age 35.
Hormonal imbalances, ovulation disorders, blocked fallopian tubes, and endometriosis can also play a role. All of these conditions can be linked to infertility, and each needs to be evaluated individually to find the right solution, notes Dr. Kava.
Male Factors Behind Infertility
In men, infertility can stem from issues with semen quality, including a low sperm concentration, or problems with sperm motility or shape (morphology), all of which can affect fertility.
If you suspect you may be dealing with infertility, or are having trouble conceiving, it’s a good idea to see a reproductive medicine specialist, who can help find the right solution for your specific situation.
Dr. Kava notes that a range of treatment options are available today, from simpler approaches to more advanced ones, such as in vitro fertilization, to help support a successful pregnancy.
