ABC Medical Center and Parkinson’s Disease 2025

ABC Medical Center joins the global commemoration of World Parkinson’s Day, observed annually on April 11, to raise awareness about this health condition.

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement and coordination, worsening over time and eventually becoming disabling for those who suffer from it.

According to the World Health Organization, the global prevalence of Parkinson’s disease has doubled in the last 25 years, and in 2019 alone, it caused 329,000 deaths—a more than 100% increase compared to the year 2000. This highlights the urgent need for greater awareness of this disease.

As part of this effort, ABC Medical Center hosted two days of talks dedicated to Parkinson’s, led by Dr. Héctor Rubén Martínez Hernández, in Auditorium A at the Santa Fe Campus.

On Thursday, April 10, the event was directed toward neurologists, neurosurgeons, internal medicine specialists, geriatricians, psychiatrists, nurses, residents, and other healthcare professionals. The talks were held in person with 65 attendees and included the following presentations:

  • New technologies and diagnostic algorithms for Parkinson’s disease, Dr. Nadia Alejandra Gandarilla Martínez.
  • Use of digital technology to detect and track symptoms and progression of Parkinson’s diseaseDr. Héctor Rubén Martínez Hernández
  • Digital applications to support patients with Parkinson’s disease, Dr. Mireilles Salas Crisóstomo.
  • New alpha-synuclein-based disease-modifying therapies for Parkinson’s disease , Dr. Carolina Ramírez Gómez.
  • Other new disease-modifying therapies in Parkinson’s disease, – Dr. José Fernando García Hernández.
  • Advances and the future of surgery for Parkinson’s diseaseDr. Rodrigo Mercado Pimentel

On Friday, April 11, sessions were held for patients and their families in a hybrid format. There were 40 in-person and 87 virtual attendees. The topics included:

  • Practical advice, exercise, and rehabilitation for gait issues in Parkinson’s disease Dr. Marta E. Brito de León & Lic. Isadora Esparza Paredones.
