Child Growth and Development

It’s important to understand that a child’s growth and development happens in various ways, encompassing physical, intellectual, emotional, and even social changes.

It’s completely normal for child growth and development to happen at very different rates from one child to another, which makes it difficult to define an exact “normal.” Some children may be taller than others of the same age, some may appear slimmer, and others may have a different body composition; these differences depend on diet, genetics, and daily activity levels.

Stages of Child GrowthThere are four main stages of a child’s growth:

  • Infancy: from birth to two or three years of age, this stage involves major physical changes, with the fastest growth rate of a person’s entire life; babies can even triple their birth weight.
  • Preschool years: from ages two to five, children typically gain around two kilograms (about 4.4 lbs) per year and grow between five and seven centimeters (about 2–2.75 inches) in height.
  • Middle childhood: from six to eight years old, this is when mental abilities develop more rapidly and communication skills improve.
  • Adolescence: starting around age nine, as children begin to develop their own unique individual identities.

Key Considerations for Healthy Child Growth

Throughout this stage, several factors need to be considered regarding a child’s growth.

Family height plays an important role in determining whether a child is growing at a typical rate. Systemic conditions, such as digestive or respiratory issues, should also be considered.

Hormonal factors can affect bone development, as can certain syndromes involving multiple conditions. Together with healthy eating and physical activity habits, these factors all contribute to a child’s proper development.

How Can You Support the Health of a Growing Child?A child’s healthy growth is reflected in steady weight and height gain, which is why it’s important to encourage healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle. Development, on the other hand, encompasses a child’s movement, responses to stimuli, language skills, and cognitive abilities.

It’s important to monitor all of these factors to support proper growth and development. This is done in close collaboration with the pediatrician, who, from the moment the child is born, works to help them lead the healthiest, most typical life possible.
