It is essential to learn more about hemorrhagic strokes, their complications, and their treatment, as this is a medical emergency where every minute counts—not only to save a person’s life, but also to help them maintain a good quality of life.

A hemorrhagic stroke is less common than an ischemic stroke and occurs when a blood vessel supplying the brain ruptures, causing bleeding within the brain tissue. This can be triggered by various underlying conditions affecting the blood vessels, such as:

  • Uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure).
  • Overuse or high doses of blood thinners (anticoagulants).
  • Aneurysms, which are bulges that form in weak spots along blood vessel walls.
  • Accidents or head trauma.
  • Protein deposits along blood vessel walls, which cause them to weaken.
  • An ischemic stroke that converts into a hemorrhagic stroke.
  • Arteriovenous malformation (AVM).

Types of Hemorrhagic Stroke

Based on its location, there are two main types of hemorrhagic stroke:

  • Intracerebral hemorrhage: Bleeding occurs within the brain tissue (parenchyma) or inside the brain’s ventricular system.
  • Subarachnoid hemorrhage: The primary type of hemorrhagic stroke, which typically occurs due to a ruptured aneurysm bleeding into the space surrounding the brain.

Treatment for Hemorrhagic Stroke

Treating a hemorrhagic stroke requires determining the exact area where blood has accumulated. If the bleeding is located near the surface of the brain, a surgical procedure may be performed both to repair the damaged vessel and to drain the collected blood.

In other cases, an angiography—an imaging technique used to evaluate blood flow and pressure within the arteries—may be necessary.

The main goal of treatment is to stop the bleeding. Therefore, continuous monitoring is required, which also helps assess any resulting neurological deficits while strictly managing blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and fever.

Complications and Aftereffects of Hemorrhagic Stroke

The long-term effects of a hemorrhagic stroke—similar to an ischemic stroke—will vary depending on the location of the brain damage, the extent of the injury, and how quickly medical care was received.

Some of the most common complications include:

  • Motor control impairments: Partial or total paralysis, muscle weakness, and loss of balance or coordination.
  • Sensory changes: Alterations affecting vision, touch, or overall sensation.
  • Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).
  • Communication impairments: Difficulty speaking, articulating sounds, recognizing words, or recalling names (aphasia/dysarthria).
  • Behavioral changes: Shifts in personality, where the individual may become more impulsive, aggressive, or withdrawn.
  • Emotional disturbances: Increased anxiety, depression, irritability, frustration, or apathy, among others.
