ABC Medical Center developed, implemented, and tested an emergency preparedness program to respond to global contagious diseases, for which it established prevention, response, and containment measures in the event of an epidemic or pandemic due to respiratory viruses, contributing to efficient, effective, and safe care of ABC Medical Center’s population.

The infection prevention and control program is led by the epidemiological surveillance unit and, for its effectiveness, it integrates different leaders from throughout the organization, has well-trained personnel, methods have been designed to proactively identify and address risks of infection in people and in the environment, adequate policies and procedures, personnel training, and coordination throughout the organization.

The Hospital Epidemiological Surveillance unit is managed by a medical professional with a specialty in epidemiology who was president of the Mexican Association for the Study of Nosocomial Infections (Asociación Mexicana para el Estudio de las Infecciones Nosocomiales, AMEIN) and has worked closely with the Mexican Association for Sterile Processing (Asociación Mexicana para el Procesamiento Estéril, AMEXPE) and participated in health professionals’ training nationally and internationally.

One of the infection control program objectives is to use isolation rooms to prevent the transmission of infectious agents that can remain suspended in the air for a long time. At ABC Medical Center there are rooms with negative pressure, as well as effective systems to create temporary isolation that involve the use of high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration systems.

ABC Medical Center has a program with isolation and barrier procedures. These procedures establish guidelines that allow specific prevention and control measures to be carried out to avoid the transmission of infectious agents as well as precautions based on airway drops and contact according to the classification of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Atlanta, Georgia, and NOM 045, which must be met by hospital staff, visitors and relatives who enter the patient’s room.
