Key points:

  • Pneumonia

  • Preventive measures

  • Treatment

Pneumonia is a type of respiratory tract infection that directly affects the lungs and is caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In adults, bacteria are the most common cause.

This disease mainly attacks older adults and children, so we must be aware and avoid contagion.

How can I prevent pneumonia?

Eat a proper diet and drink enough water

Poor nutrition and dehydration favor the development of pneumonia. If you follow a diet rich in nutrients and drink at least two liters of water a day, you will help keep the body strong against viruses and bacteria attacks.

Vaccines will be your best shield

There are various vaccination campaigns, especially in the holiday season, which is when the outbreaks increase. Approach your treating physician to recommend the best option.

Refrain from visiting sick people

Pneumonia is quickly transmitted by direct contagion between people, so one of the main prevention measures is to separate the elderly and healthy children to curb the possibility of contagion.

Cleanliness is essential

As we know, hand washing can mean a big difference between getting infected or not. Take it as a habit and instill it in your children as well.

Keep your lungs healthy

Physical activity and a smoke-free environment can go a long way in keeping your lungs healthy and ready for any respiratory disease.

Keep yourself warm!

Cold wind can increase the risk of contracting respiratory illnesses and end in severe pneumonia.

I have pneumonia, what is the treatment?

If you have symptoms such as fever or difficulty breathing, it is very important that you schedule an appointment with your doctor, either online or in person, following all the corresponding health measures.

The most common treatment is based on antibiotics, however, the treating physician will be the one to tell you which medications are right for you and if you need to be hospitalized or you can take your treatment at home.

Remember that self-medication can cause the disease to worsen or produce negative results, always go to a doctor!

We share some measures to reduce symptoms in case of contracting pneumonia:

  • Use a humidifier with hot water, if your doctor allows it you can add a few drops of essential oils. The goal is to inhale the hot steam to help your lungs clear out.
  • Take 2-3 deep breaths every hour, this may help open up your lungs and help you breathe easier.
  • If you have a lot of phlegm, tap very gently on your chest, a few times a day. This way you could help remove congested phlegm in the chest.
